Wichita reacts to “What’s the Matter with Kansas?”
For audiences across the country, “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” is a fascinating journey into the heart of American conservatism, a place that for many of us is warmly familiar yet utterly foreign — in the best documentary fashion, the movie gets viewers close to people they don’t really know. In Wichita, however, everybody feels they already know these folks, they are their neighbors.
Wichita screening – Thursday, July 8 – one night only!
After running for eight weeks in Lawrence and Kansas City, “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” will finally screen again in Wichita, in the heart of the state, where much of the filming took place.
The Wichita Public Library will screen the movie on Thursday, July 8 at 6:00 pm.
The screening is part of the library’s 25th [...]
Brownback challenged from his Right
It looks like the latest challenge to the political right in Kansas is…the even further right?
Joan Heffington of Derby, KS recently announced her candidacy for governor of Kansas, pitting herself directly against the current GOP front-runner, Senator Sam Brownback. The Topeka Capitol-Journal reports:
Heffington, a Derby resident who has never held political office, said insight into [...]
Scott Roeder found guilty of first-degree murder of Dr. George Tiller
Today, the Wichita Eagle reports, a Wichita jury found Scott Roeder guilty of first-degree murder in the slaying of Dr. George Tiller. He faces a life sentence for the crime.
For those who feared that the trial would become a referendum on the abortion issue, or the Pro-Life movement, or that a lenient verdict would embolden [...]
Pro-Life groups react as trial set to begin for Scott Roeder
Scott Roeder, who was seen by eyewitnesses to shoot and kill Dr. George Tiller in his church last May, is set to stand trial in Wichita next week. After having his “necessity defense” rejected (that’s based on the idea that he was preventing some greater harm by killing Dr. Tiller and preventing future abortions) Roeder [...]
FBI was warned about Scott Roeder before he shot Dr. Tiller
From the Associated Press:
More than a month before the shooting of a high-profile abortion doctor, the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Kansas City received an anonymous letter warning that the man now charged in the case “would do physical harm” to Dr. George Tiller or any other abortion provider, the agency said.
The story gets strange [...]
New York is becoming more like Kansas
In the election for the 23rd District in upper New York State, Democrat, Bill Owens narrowly defeated Conservative Party candidate, Douglas L. Hoffman. But that isn’t the real story.
What’s interesting is that the Republican nominee, Dede Scozzafava, a moderate, withdrew from the race under pressure from leading conservative activists like Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty. [...]
Operation Rescue: “We’re not dead yet”
Defiant as ever, Wichita-based Pro-Life activists Operation Rescue proclaim they’ve recovered from its financial crisis earlier this year. Presumably donations plunged after intense public backlash against the murder of Dr. George Tiller back in May – despite the groups clear repudiation of the accused killer, Scott Roeder. From their press release:
Recently, the Associated Press, along [...]
Video: director Joe Winston on The Interview Show
A few weeks back, Joe had the great pleasure of sitting for a chat with Mark Bazer, the witty and talented host of The Interview Show, a monthly talk show which tapes at the Hideout in Chicago.
As good as the video is, it was much more fun to see the show live. Talkshow + [...]
Can liberals and conservatives enjoy the same movie?
Our film adaptation of Thomas Frank’s “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” raises eyebrows with some fans of the book, because it does not set out to explain the whole argument Frank makes about why social conservatives overwhelmingly vote Republican (even last fall, in the face of economic disaster.)
